Well, it’s been a hot minute since my last post. I have been so so busy IRL that I have been neglecting my blog. BUT, I wanted to hop on and share my thoughts about E3 that just got over, while it’s all fresh in my mind.
For those of you who don’t know what E3 is, it’s basically a conference that started out being intended for journalists to attend and game developers and publishing companies would share what they are working on and what would be released for the next year. Then they added a show floor that was open to the public, and now it’s streamed so people all over the world can see what’s going on. It’s pretty dope if you ask me.
For me I care about very specific conferences; Sony, Bethesda, & the PC Gaming Show. But I usually watch all of it, and I know lots of people like to chime in on which show they think “won”. Personally, this seems silly to me, but I will say who I think “lost” the show this year and for me, that would be EA…for me that was the one that was the most boring and painful for me to watch.
I know a ton of people really loved the XBox conference this year, but I wonder if people realize the amount of buzzword and creative marketing that was used in that presentation. For me, it was a huge turn-off, and I’m more of a quality over quantity kind of consumer so I really wasn’t their target market this year (plus I totally acknowledge that I am a PlayStation fangirl and it’s easily my favorite current-gen console).
But enough about that. Let’s talk about the games! This year I have two categories; Game I’ll Buy on Release, & Games I’ll Buy on Sale. There is a third category of Games I’m Not Interested In, but I’m not listing those because the list is about a mile long of how many games were shown. Personally, I’m really burnt out on FPS, BR, & Survival. This also lets me know how much money I need to save up for any games I want to pick up in the coming year. So let’s jump right into it:
Games I’ll Buy on Release:
These games are ones that I have been following, or that look STUPID interesting to me. Thinks I look for on these are story driven, RPG, fantasy, third person POV, or whatever that magic sauce is.
- Kingdom Hearts 3 (Releasing January 29, 2019)
- Spiderman (Releasing September 7, 2018)
- Death Standing (TBA)
- Ghost of Tushanami (TBA)
- TUNIC (2018…? TBA)
- Cyberpunk 2077 (June 2019)
- Captain Spirit (June 26, 2018)
- Ooblets (2018…TBA)
Games I’ll Buy On Sale
These are games that I think look super interesting and meet things on the list mentioned above, but they just didn’t sell me as well. (Also the only reason Last of Us Part 2 is on here is because I haven’t played the first one but I’ve been meaning to, don’t judge me!).
- We Happy Few (August 10, 2018)
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider (September 14, 2018)
- Last of Us Part 2 (TBA)
Now there was one game I feel like I need to address because it made it into the Games I’m Not Interested In the category, and that is Fallout 76. Like I mentioned earlier I’m super burnt out on FPS, BR, & Survival and for all intensive purposes that’s what the game sounds like to me. I want to also state I’m not excited about Anthem, The Division 2, or the next expansion of Destiny 2. While I think all those games are interesting concepts, I and have great potential, I was so disappointed with Destiny 2 that I don’t really hold a lot of hope out for other games in the genre.
I was also deeply impressed with the number of indie games being released and that was shown at the conferences. In general, I’m not a fan of indie games, they have to be pretty stinking special for me to jump into them. To give you an idea of the indie games I do like; I am a huge fan of Darkest Dungeon, Hand of Fate, & Don’t Starve (as well as Don’t Starve Together). I am glad that they are shown and getting the exposure they need, I am all for indie games, I’m just picky about what I play, even when it comes to triple-A titles. Pretty sure Ooblets is the only game I am interested in picking up.
Lastly, there was nothing from Nintendo that I was super excited about, BUT, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is coming and I am very excited to watch! My boyfriend is all about it, and we like to watch tournaments so it will be super interesting to see how the community picks up this game. I am also aware that a bunch of people wanted a new Animal Crossing game to be announced but I think that is a long way off, they just released Pocket Camp and it’s doing incredibly well for them so they are probably going to milk that for a while.
What are on your to buy list? Anything you really hated about E3 this year? Do you care about who “Won” the conference? Feel free to leave me a comment & let’s chat about it all!
